FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) – The Fishersville United Methodist Church Food Pantry received a van last year to bring food to people who cannot make it a food pantry.
Food pantry director, Donna Kluefer said with their partnership with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, they are able to get food at a lower cost to fill the pantry.
“We get USDA foods from them and some other foods from them,” Kluefer said,“They have of variety and we sometimes get dog food and cat from them.”
Around Christmas, the food pantry got a truck that will put the pantry on the road.
“Our first venture is going to be on March 10, we are going up to the Briarwood housing development that is just up the street from the church, those folks work and are unable to get to the food pantry during the day, this will enable them to get some food and some fresh produce,” Kluefer said.
Blue Ridge Area Food Bank CEO Michael McKee said providing the van will the food pantry get food to people who do not have access to transportation.
“This is a way to for the food pantry to meet people where they are quite literally and help people who do not have access to transportation get the food they need,” McKee said.
Over the years, Kluefer noticed more people coming to food pantry and expects the need to keep growing.
“When we first started ten years, if we had ten people on a Tuesday it was a big day, last week I had 35,” Kluefer said.
McKee said the BRAFB is serving more people in 2025 than they served during the worst of the pandemic.
