Soul food lunch supports community programs, celebrates Black History Month

The Pigeon Community Multicultural Development Center in Waynesville held a soul food lunch on the last day of Black History Month.

The annual event raises money for the center, and it’ll go towards kids’ programs and senior programs.

More than 150 people enjoyed fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. For dessert, there was peach cobbler.

They hope this annual event also brings awareness to the center.

“Our building was the African American School for Haywood County, and it has been turned over to the community. It’s a place of welcome and gathering where folks gather across lines, make friends, and forge relationships that go past the doors of the building,” said Pigeon Center Program Director and Board Co-Chair, Tausha Forney.

The center is a staple of the community offering programs for all ages.

In March, they will host their popular fish fry.
