2025 Food Lion CIAA Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals Recap

Baltimore, MD. – Day three of the 2025 Food Lion CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament saw four exciting quarterfinals games take place as the tournament narrowed itself down to four men’s and four women’s squads. 

(Women’s) Virginia Union def. Claflin, 59-55
In a game that came down to the final 30 seconds, the Virginia Union University Panthers used a pair of key stops along with a pair of free throws to match to slide by the Claflin Panthers, 59-55, Thursday afternoon in the women’s tournament quarterfinals. With the win, VUU advances to Friday’s semifinals to face defending CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University. Jones led the Panthers with 14 points while Morris posted a game-high 19 points.

(Men’s) Bluefield State def. Johnson C. Smith, 84-69
Bluefield State defeated Johnson C. Smith 84-69 in a solid conference matchup at CFG Bank Arena. The Bluefield State offense was led by Jordan Hinds, who scored 24 points, while Terrell Williams contributed 18 points. Johnson C. Smith struggled from beyond the arc, finishing 4-11 on three-pointers, and despite a strong 17-point performance from Jamauri Bryant, they couldn’t keep pace. Bluefield State dominated the paint, scoring 46 points inside and forcing 24 points off turnovers, securing the win to advance to the final four of the men’s tournament.

(Women’s) Bowie State def. Livingstone, 68-54
Bowie State University and Livingstone College battled in a tightly contested matchup at the CIAA Tournament, with the Bulldogs securing a 68-54 victory at CFG Bank Arena on Thursday evening. Destiny Ryles led the way for Bowie State, finishing with 21 points, while Morgan Kelson posted 11 points. Bowie State will now face off with Virginia State for a chance to play in the finals.

(Men’s) Lincoln (PA) def. Claflin, 56-53
Lincoln University (PA) secured a 56-53 victory over Claflin University, advancing to the semifinals of the men’s basketball tournament. The Lions will face Virginia State University on Friday, February 28, at 2:00 PM. Peter Sorber led the team with 15 points, meanwhile Ethan Garita netted 14 points. The Lions’ strong performance against Claflin sets the stage for an exciting semifinal matchup against Virginia State, who advanced with a 67-59 win over Bowie State on February 26.
