VIDEO | A boost for Delaware’s efforts to improve literacy rates

Learning to be a better reader can be fun, as demonstrated in Wilmington Thursday.

Second-graders took part in a countdown to release a load of donated books, card games, video games and other learning materials to be distributed to Delaware libraries as well as youth correctional facilities. The materials were developed by Mrs. Wordsmith, a literacy company that includes artists, game designers, teachers, researchers and scientists. WRITING CHANGE is a program supported by the Estée Lauder  Companies Foundation and inspired by youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman.

“Delaware libraries are proud to be the backbone for the Delaware Literacy Alliance, which is a National Communities of Excellence initiative,” Delaware Division of Libraries Director Dr. Annie Norman said. “Librarians and literacy professionals throughout the state have joined forces to address literacy across the life span – not just to improve low literacy. The goal is to raise super-readers, to improve opportunities in pursuit of everyone’s Delaware dream.”

United Way of Delaware joined the celebration, as well as Wilmington Mayor John Carney. Carney said one significant priority carries over from his time as Governor: “making sure that all of our children, no matter where they live – whether they’re in the City of Wilmington or in Kent County or Sussex County – can read proficiently by third grade.”

Mrs. Wordsmith President Brandon Cardet-Hernandez, himself once a teacher and principal in The Bronx, said they build video games, card games, workbooks and “all this really cool stuff, that help teach two skills that I think are really important: vocabulary and phonics.”

“We co-design all of our products with young people – they’re part of the design work,” Cardet-Hernandez added. “Then, we release it into the world and we hope our kids are reading and learning.”
