Gene Hackman & Ex-Wife Shared 3 Children Together: Hugged His Son ‘Every Day’

Legendary actor Gene Hackman had three kids with his ex-wife Faye Maltese.

Hackman and his ex-wife had a son Christopher and daughters Elizabeth and Leslie together, according to Page Six. Maltese and Hackman were together “for decades” before divorcing, Page Six reported, noting that they were married in 1956.

“I have three children,” he said in a 1984 interview with Leta Powell.

“I like to keep my personal life fairly common, so that in my art, one can let go and one can soar,” he told interviewer John C. Tibbetts in 1989. Although his children attended movie premieres with him over the years, they have largely kept private lives.

Gene Hackman Said He Hugged His Son Christopher Every Day

Hackman discussed his performance in “Bonnie and Clyde” as one of his favorite performances in the Powell interview.

In that interview, he also brought up his son Christopher, who was born in 1960. He told Powell that he hugged Christopher “every day.”

“I thank God that we are able to do that. I don’t think we’ll ever have a point where we have to shake hands,” he told her.

“We still hug to this day,” he said.

He once discussed with GQ the challenges of raising a son while on movie sets, and he acknowledged, “It was very tough for me to be gone for three months and then come home and start bossing him around.”

But he told Larry King, according to People, “I took care of my family. My family’s never wanted for anything, but because I was so enamored of the Hollywood of old, the glamour of that — although I never involved myself in that — I was really so taken with that, the fact that I was part of that and that I could be anything and anyone I wanted to be.”

According to Page Six, Hackman took his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, to movie premieres over the years, like “Superman” in 1978 and the “Chamber” in 1996.

Page Six reported that he also appeared at premieres with his younger daughter Leslie, taking her to a premiere of “The Godfather III” and “Class Action,” as well as the Golde Globes Award Show.

In 2000, Hackman told the Cigar Aficionado publication, “I used to have to borrow my daughter’s car to go to interviews in Hollywood. Just a piece-of-(expletive) Toyota and I’d have to park it a couple of blocks [away] and walk so I wouldn’t be seen as being that needy.” It wasn’t clear which daughter he meant, though.

Hackman, 95, was discovered deceased with his second wife, pianist Betsy Arakawa and their dog, on February 27, 2025, according to TMZ. His first wife Faye Maltese died in 2017; they were married from 1956 to 1986, according to People.
