The transition from a rural to an urban college setting can be pretty drastic. Suddenly, there are cars and sirens all around, lots of foot traffic and infinitely many places to eat. When my boyfriend came to visit me this past weekend, he was absolutely astonished.
For one, he’d never visited the Bay Area. The architecture on and off campus and the weather really stood out to him. Secondly, he was head over heels for the food in Berkeley. Every day, we would order from different restaurants, and each time he was impressed. Of course, he had some opinions on the places we ate at:
Review 1: Boichik Bagels
An absolutely perfect breakfast and brunch spot. You get so much bang for your buck. Bagels are HUGE and perfect for sharing if you’re not hungry enough for the whole thing. We were lucky enough to not have to wait in any lines, as they can sometimes get a bit long. My boyfriend loved the egg bagels, and I am a huge fan of the “eggything bagels” — egg bagels with everything seasoning. Five stars! No complaints.
Review 2: Baker & Commons
Once again, an amazing brunch spot! Food is a bit pricey, but not bad at all for the area. It’s a super quick walk from Southside and has lots of seating both indoors and outdoors. The avocado toast is very tasty, but we would recommend adding arugula and a poached egg on top. The biscuits are a must-try!
Review 3: Hashtag Poki
So, so, so good! Words cannot describe how tasty this poke is. The serving looked small, but the food was extremely filling. It’s quite the walk from campus, so I would highly recommend ordering with Grubhub (using flex dollars of course) to get your hands on it.
Review 4: La Burrita
A classic. We had a hankering for some burritos, so we rushed over from the East Asian Library and chowed down. Great portions, great salsa and great people. If you haven’t been to La Burrita, you haven’t been to Berkeley.
Review 5: Butterfish Sushi
Possibly some of the best sushi I’ve had in my life. We were fortunate enough to have my boyfriend’s mom take us out to lunch since this place is definitely on the pricier end. Super cute, small location with a welcoming ambiance. Workers were the absolute sweetest. Sitting at the bar and getting to see how everything was made was such a treat. 10/10!
Review 6: Oori Triangles
Simply delicious. We ordered the three-piece set of rice triangles, and it was perfect. You get to choose from a variety of their different flavors, so each triangle is an entirely new experience. I am a huge fan of umeboshi, so I would strongly recommend you give it a try.
Review 7: Mezzo
The staple lunch place. My boyfriend didn’t believe me when I explained just how large the sandwiches are. There’s not much to say other than you need to go if you haven’t already been! Six stars.
Review 8: Plentea
I’ll be honest, this is one of only two boba shops I have tried in Berkeley, but I think it’s delicious, so I keep going back. The glass jars are too cute to resist. We would recommend getting double honey boba in your drink. It’s so good. I need more.
Review 9: Super Duper Burgers
Okay, there are some opposing opinions on this spot. It is very tasty and filling but also very greasy. To clarify, being greasy isn’t a bad thing — it’s just something to note. If you’re craving a burger, you really can’t go wrong. The fries were incredible.
Review 10: Moonbowls
This is one of my go-to Grubhub spots. I absolutely love these Korean-style bowls! It’s a bit pricey, but only if you like to add a lot of toppings — which I do. The bowls are filling but not heavy and the perfect refreshing and reviving dinner after a long, long day. Please go!
And that concludes the many, many, many spots (not including dining halls) that I had the pleasure of visiting this past weekend. If you’re ever in the Berkeley area, consider stopping by, and if you live in the Berkeley area, make sure to stop by.
