Blessings in a Backpack rebranding program in Wausau and D.C. Everest school districts

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Blessings in a Backpack is rebranding their program in the Wausau and D.C. Everest school districts.

They have a new place online for you to sign up to help pack and to give monetary donations. It’s no secret that the program is under investigation for financial discrepancies. The nonprofit says that the investigation is still on-going, but kids still need to get food on the weekends in the school districts. Erin Noll is one of the new program coordinators. Right now, they need monetary donations, and volunteers to help pack those bags. They feed around 1800 kids in 9 schools from both counties. Packing happens every Tuesday at Community Partners Campus in Wausau. People of all ages can come and get in line and help pack those bags, that food then gets distributed.

“This is extremely important for all of our children in the Community, that might not have food at home on the weekends, so we pack 2 meals for them, and as well as two breakfast and two snacks so that they can get through for the weekend before they get to school on Monday,” said Erin Noll, Program Coordinator, Blessings In a Backpack.

Due to food standards, the program can only receive money donations. They are hoping to receive $100,000 in donations for their mission.

You can also help pack backpacks for those kids in need. I met Charlotte Coleman at the packing party. She’s a student at EEA Learning Academy in Wausau. At the school, students have to do volunteer hours. Blessings in a Backpack is one of the volunteer options. If you’re not familiar, they help feed kids on the weekends who need food before Monday morning, they send that food home in backpacks in the Wausau and D.C. Everest school districts. Charlotte said they have many choices, but she chose Blessings in a Backpack, so she can give back to a program that helped her family.

“All my little siblings used to get Blessings in a Backpack, it’s a really big program that just basically helps kids in so many different school districts in this area get the food that they sometimes cannot get when they’re at home or on the weekends, they contribute to so many kids eating per year that this stuff is incredibly important,” said Coleman.
