LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -Forty beds built in three to four hours…
That’s how fast volunteers with Sleep in Heavenly Peace can build beds for kids in need.
“And there’s 40 children, out of this day, that will be off the floor,” said Assistant Build Manager Michael Oakes.
For many children across Mid-Michigan, the beds built by Sleep in Heavenly Peace volunteers are their first bed.
“This is their first chance not sleeping on the floor or on a pile of laundry, and they’re happy to have the pillow, the sheets, the whole thing set up when we get there,” Oakes said.
While volunteers offer their time for free… the resources to make the beds can cost a significant amount of money.
“The Bunkhead Program is easy to sign up, it’s an automatic auto-pay, $20 a month. And then over the course of the year, which is about $240, that equals the materials for the bed, the headboard, the wood, the mattress, the sheets, the pillow, everything,” Oakes said.
Being a Bunkhead member for one year helps volunteers build one bed. The goal this year is to build and deliver 800 beds.
If you do the math, that means the nonprofit is looking for at least 800 Bunkhead members to help build beds for the whole year.
If you don’t have the financial means to give a monetary donation…
“We’re always looking for volunteers. A lot of people here might only come once or twice. It’s great that they come out, but then it rotates,” Oakes said.
“Anywhere that volunteers feel comfortable, whether it’s with power tools or without, we’ve got a spot for them.”
