Kids Outdoors Otsego’s winter fun day to feature activities for parents, children

GAYLORD — Unlike last year, there isn’t a lack of snow in Northern Michigan and Kids Outdoors Otsego wants parents and children to enjoy winter activities.

From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on March 1, Kids Outdoors Otsego (KOO) will present a winter fun day at the Environmental Learning Site located behind the Gaylord Middle School, 600 E. Fifth St. The learning site focuses on environmental learning and is the result of an effort several years ago by the Otsego Wildlife Legacy Society, or Owls.

What is the KOO Outdoor Winter Fun Day 2025?

It’s a day of winter-related activities presented by Kids Outdoors Otsego, a volunteer group in Otsego County promoting outdoor activity in nature for young children and their families. KOO also presents other activity days during the year.

Sam Cornelius of KOO said last year there was barely enough snow to have a winter fun day.

“This year, of course, we have lots of snow,” he said.

Who is eligible to participate?

Families are the main focus, including children from infant to about 8 years old.

“The parents are partnered with their kids the whole time when they are out on the trail or doing an activity, the parents are very involved,” said Cornelius.

What type of activities will be available?

Snowshoeing is offered on short trail loops in the woods. Participants can bring their own snowshoes or use one of the loaners for kids and adults from the HeadWaters Land Conservancy.

Sled rides will be offered on the trails with parents/caregivers doing the pulling. You can bring a sled or borrow one from KOO. Snow mazes, angels and other games will be available.

There will also be “make-it” winter craft projects. There will be a drawing at noon, that you can enter when arriving, for outdoor prizes.

What about beverages and a break from the cold?

There will be a bonfire and hot drinks will be available. Biggby Coffee is donating hot chocolate while the Great Start Collaborative, a parent organization serving Cheboygan, Presque Isle and Otsego counties, will furnish snacks.

The Nature Cabin will be open to get out of the wind. “Izzy,” the Otsego County Library dog, is scheduled to make an appearance.

Is there a fee for the event?

As usual there is no fee or charge. Because all of the activities are outside, participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and can come and go as they please. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at all times. The walk from the parking area to the site is a snowy trail.
