TROY, Ala. (WSFA) – Malyric Banks, a teacher at Troy Elementary School, is living up to her name, using songs, lyrics, crafts, and even food to inspire her students. The teacher incorporates all elements into her STEM lessons.
“I love math and science because you can integrate the subjects easily, and you can use so many different things in the classroom,” she said.
STEM is a trending acronym in the world of education, with many schools and school systems shifting to a focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Banks started teaching just three years ago and says when she was a student at Troy University, she wasn’t sure if this was the path for her.
“I knew I wanted to teach, but I wasn’t sure about math. I was not good at math when I was in high school. So, I tell my students, it’s okay if you’re not good at it,” she said.
Banks hopes her story and struggles will inspire her 4th grade students. As a young teacher and an Alabama native, she says she looks at her students like “little brothers and sisters.” They spend time laughing and learning.
“We joke around, we play, but when it’s time to get serious, we’re serious,” she said. “I bring in things like brownies and cookies to measure and I even rap for them sometimes. Whatever it takes to make sure it sticks.”
