LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -In the greater Lansing area it’s estimated that 6,000 kids don’t have their own bed to sleep on.
The non-profit group “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” aims to reduce that number.
One man who has made it his mission to provide beds to kids in need is Jarrod Olsen, president of the organization’s Lansing chapter.
At a warehouse in Haslett, he helps dozens of volunteers turn raw lumber, into all the parts needed to build bunk-beds and single beds for kids who don’t have one to call their own.
“It was something that I was doing, because I had the time to do it, kind of help give back, but it turned into something bigger than we ever thought it would be,” Olsen said.
When he started volunteering seven years ago, Olsen says the need was overwhelming.
“The first year, we had a waitlist of 750 To 800 kids… It took us nearly three years to catch up that list,” Olsen recalls.
For Jarrod Olsen what started as a bed-building pastime, has grown into a life-changing passion.
We caught up with him recently when he was delivering the pieces to build a bunk bed and two single beds to a home in Lansing.
On the receiving end, a single dad and his four young daughters, twin three-year-olds and a five and six-year-old.
With the help of his eleven-year-old daughter Ella, Jarrod pieced together all the pre-drilled lumber for a new way to slumber, giving the girls a chance to sleep in heavenly peace.
When the construction was complete, and the new mattresses and bedding were on, Olsen could rest assured he had improved the lives of four young girls.
“I’ll look back and say I personally affected “X” number of lives of kids and that to me… that’s important,” Olsen said
