Tye Dye Cafe hosts second free food giveaway, aiming for regular events

The Tye Dye Cafe in Redding held its second free food giveaway, offering meals and various items to anyone in need. The event on Sunday follows a successful December giveaway where over 300 meals were distributed, along with socks and eyeliner.

Josh Jarred, owner of the Tye Dye Cafe, said the community’s support has grown, making it easier to organize these events. In December, Jarred and local volunteers handed out hundreds of cups of soup. This time, they prepared vats of homemade chili, served with hot drinks, cornbread, and essentials like socks, dog treats, and eyeliner.

Jarred noted that local businesses have become more involved. Sharing Cali Customs, Franz Bakery, and US Foods CHEF’STORE all made major contributions to this month’s event, and he covered any shortfall from his own pocket.

“Nobody else is,” he said, referring to holding free food giveaways. “People need to eat and it’s a good thing to give someone just a hand right out. Everybody likes food. They don’t have to be homeless, they just have to be hungry.”

Jarred said by the end of the day, they’d served just over 200 at this month’s event. Due to the scale of organizing and fundraising, Jarred plans to hold these events every two to three months, with seasonal food offerings. He encourages anyone interested in volunteering to reach out.
