CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – After years of teaching himself how to code, a Charlotte resident creates a viral, satire video game called “Exit 3A: The Game.”
“I just want people to, like kind of laugh, enjoy it … I think for Exit 3A, I don’t know if it’s cathartic or something to play this kind of fun version of this nightmare you might experience every day,” the Exit 3A: The Game developer said.
After getting a degree in journalism, he has been teaching himself how to code for more than 10 years. He makes video games in his free time away from his software engineer day job.
“I went to the library and got books and like, and I started buying my own books,” Ramirez said. “I’m always like making games like kind of based on stuff that happens in my life.”
So after experiencing Exit 3A enough times and hearing others share his stress around the 277 turn off, he started building a video game about it making this project his “new years resolution.”
“[Exit 3A is] just like a nightmare … I tense up like my heart starts racing, you know, like as you’re like, seeing all the traffic,” said Ramirez. “I kind of it kind of started as a joke that I would make a game about an exit and then my friends were like, ‘yeah, you should do that.’”

After a little bit of peer pressure, a longing to lean into game making, and a lot of time coding and designing, Exit 3A:The Game was born.
“I just have the like map of what the exit looks like, and so I know that gonna make the world that like it’s shaped that way and then just add traffic,” Ramirez said.
The goal of the game is to make it through Exit 3A without a crash with the highest score and to encourage other coding hobbyists to keep creating.
Ramirez said the game is still being built but he hopes to first launch the game in a game cabinet at NoDa arcade bar Super Abari.
He said he hopes to inspire others who are interested in game-making to keep creating.
To stay up to date with his progress on the game, and a launch date, follow his account on Instagram, @Exit3A_thegame.
He launched the account hoping others would enjoy watching the art come to life.
“It’s cool to see art when it’s finished, but it’s also cool to see, like behind the scenes like, I see the progress. I think a lot of people like just look at the art like as it is and like, ignore how long it took to get there,“ Ramirez said. ”How many times people start over when they’re working on something? That is like a lot of time, and sometimes it gets lost and I don’t know. I wanted to kind of highlight that, I guess.”
