LOCUST GROVE, Okla. — The food pantry in Locust Grove is at risk of closing unless they raise enough money to buy the building they are currently renting.
The Ministerial Alliance of Locust Grove Food Pantry moved out of the building they were in for three years, four weeks ago.
“Without us, I don’t know what they will do,” said Shanny Weaver, President of the Ministerial Alliance of Locust Grove Food Pantry.
Now, they are in danger of closing their doors forever.
“We had the opportunity to purchase the building we are currently in right now. We moved just about 4 weeks ago, was set at 130,000 dollars but the landlord has dropped the price to 100,000 dollars for us to be able to buy this building,” said Weaver.
Weaver says the landlord of the new building has given them six months to raise the $100,000 needed to buy the property.
“We never have to move again. We don’t have to pay rent again. It will belong to the Ministerial Alliance of Locust Grove once we reach our goal of $100,000,” said Weaver.
Weaver says the building the pantry just moved to is the perfect location.
“Property is expensive. We want to stay downtown in Locust Grove with a store front,” said Weaver.
The food pantry serves 1,500 people from all walks of life each month and most don’t have transportation.
“We have a gentlemen that actually walks seven miles to the food pantry in order to get food. We really appreciate him, we never know when he’s going to show up he just shows up. We get him food and all his needs provided for him and then we will take him home so he doesn’t have to carry all his food seven miles back,” said Weaver.
Weaver says if they are unable to raise enough money, the pantry will close.
“We want to be here and stay here for all the ones who can’t afford to buy groceries,” said Weaver.
