DUBUQUE, Iowa (KCRG) – The River Bend Food Bank’s St. Stephen’s branch says 10,000 people in Dubuque County are struggling to buy food.
Volunteers helped pack boxes of food to give away at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, who partnered with St. Stephen’s to host a food distribution event on Saturday.
“The food crisis in our city has really increased more than ever,” Lynn Sutton said.

She said she makes the trip to bring this food to people who are struggling to afford food and can’t travel due to age or illness.
“People have to choose between paying bills and eating, and it’s becoming more of a problem as time goes on,” Sutton said.
She said inflation is hitting many families hard.
“Not just food, but when everything is increasing at once, you have to find ways around it. So therefore people have to come to a food bank to cut that cost,” Sutton said.
Dozens of volunteers helped pack up boxes of food on Saturday.
But most of them were the children and teenagers that attend Holy Trinity Lutheran.
“They’re excited to help out. We have wonderful young people that are just like chomping at the bit to help out, to serve their community, to be a part of something,” Holy Trinity Lutheran Youth Minister Trey Graff said. “This is a great opportunity for them to do something that’s bigger than themselves,” Graff said.
Sutton said as spring approaches, there are more opportunities to help.
“If you garden, please put an extra row or two of vegetables to give to someone or give to our food banks. That will help,” Sutton said.
The church says it plans to host it’s next food distribution sometime in May, supporting a need Sutton says isn’t going away anytime soon.
“So now I’m making a plea. Let’s all join together and help with this,” Sutton said.
