BERLIN, CT — The big stink and loud noises that have alarmed some Berlin residents regarding a food processing plant in town continue to be addressed, with more progress expected.
That was the message the Town of Berlin had for residents on Thursday regarding the ongoing situation between residents and Bright Feeds, which is located at 76 Fuller Way, Berlin.
Bright Feeds takes food waste and turns it into animal feed for agricultural uses, but many folks say that charge comes with a stinky and noisy price.
The town issues a formal update on the latest regarding the matter as it pertains to resident concerns.
• Odor problems: Regarding the stomach-churning smells emanating from the site, the town said Bright Sun will install a “thermal oxidizer” in early March.
This device is expected to reduce the odor and clean the air at the facility.
Meanwhile, the town said Bright Sun has reduced production by 50 percent, only operating from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Bright Sun also is rejecting some food stocks, like raw dough and fresh pasta, which is believed to cause more odors when broken down, the town said.
• Nosie issues: Regarding noise concerns, the town has conducted a noise analysis of the site and has given Bright Sun recommendations on actions to keep the plan in line with noise worries.
