Trillium Health’s newly renovated food pantry opens

A Rochester food pantry that serves thousands of people in need celebrated a grand reopening on Thursday after a major renovation.

A ribbon cutting marked a grand reopening of Trillium Health’s food pantry and learning kitchen. The pantry operates like a grocery store, offering fresh produce, dairy and other healthy food.

In the kitchen, people with certain health issues can learn how to cook nutritious meals that can help those health conditions improve.

“That’s been very invaluable to me,” said food pantry client Rory Dumas. “I’m a senior citizen. I live on a fixed income. That stuff really helps me.”

“When Trillium approached me about a food pharmacy program, I loved the idea,” Mayor Malik Evans said in a statement. “Good health is about so much more than medicine and doctors. And the number of people who are food insecure in this community is a health crisis by itself. Improving access to nutritious food and helping people learn how to prepare the food they need for good health is a win for all of us. We welcome Trillium Health’s Food Bank and Learning Kitchen with open arms.”

The expansion was made possible by $6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds from the federal government, secured by Monroe County and the City of Rochester.
