KILLINGLY, Conn — Story by Ella Dunn, Kylie Day – Killingly High School

very year, Killingly High School and their beloved Unified Sports team holds an event near and dear to everyone’s heart. The athletes senior night.

This event always draws in a large crowd, filled with parents, classmates, teachers and community members, ready to cheer on and support the athletes and their athletic journey throughout high school.

Gianna Henson, a senior on Killingly’s Unified team, has built a home within her favorite sport, “The basketball court belongs to everyone, not just one person. Basketball is about having fun, helping each other out, and working as a team.”

This special night also includes other surrounding schools, Tourtelotte High School, and Woodstock Academy.

Dr. Sue Nash, the superintendent of the Killingly school district believes this event is not just crucial for the participating teams, but also the communities, “I think it just shows the true character of our community, how we are always lifting each other up…” teachers within the school district enjoy coming out to support these athletes, and celebrating all their accomplishments.

Health and gym teacher Derek Ponciano has been attending this event for the past few years, and thoroughly enjoys supporting his students, in and out of the classroom, “not only for Killingly High School, but like you said, the community, I think everyone loves it, looks forward to it, it’s a time for every sports team to come together and root for the Unified team.”

Assistant coach, James Esposito, a well loved security guard at the high school, joined the coaching staff two years ago, after head coach Ms. Farquhar was seeking some help on the team, and never looked back, “Ms. Farquhar asked me, and once I saw the kids and how they reacted, you couldn’t say no.”

The other surrounding schools take this as an opportunity to build relationships with each other, and become closer with their team. The athletes and coaches love this event and the excitement that comes with it.

But Christopher Kirkconnell, a postgraduate student from the Woodstock Academy, does it purely out of the love for his team, “I love this team, and I want to continue with it.” This event holds a strong impact on the community, and also a feeling these athletes will never forget.
