The Citadel names new athletic director

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Citadel has hired a familiar face in the role of athletic director.

Art Chase is returning to the military college where he previously worked two different times and after spending nearly a quarter century at Duke.

“I am excited that Art Chase is returning to The Citadel to lead our athletic teams after 25 years at Duke University,” Citadel President Gen. Glenn Walters said. “He is exceptionally qualified, familiar with our mission and prepared to make all our programs and athletes successful.”

Chase served as assistant sports information director at The Citadel for two years in the 1990s before working at Presbyterian College in a similar role. He returned to The Citadel for three years as the sports information director before departing in 2001 for Duke University’s athletic department.

“Kaye and I are both honored and humbled to return to The Citadel, and we are grateful to General Walters for the opportunity to serve an elite group of cadet-student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Chase said. “Additionally, we are deeply appreciative of Richard Johnson, Bill Sansom and the entire search committee for their support and trust, as representing The Citadel is truly a tremendous privilege.”

Chase’s hiring followed a nationwide search that included nearly 100 high-caliber candidates, Citadel officials said.

“Our commitment is to help achieve the institutional goal of developing principled leaders while placing a priority on the cadet-student-athlete experience in this challenging and evolving era of college athletics,” Chase said. “We look forward to engaging with the many internal and external stakeholders who make The Citadel such a special place.”

At Duke, Chase worked with a hugely successful lacrosse program that won multiple national championships and nine ACC championships. Over the last three seasons he also had management responsibilities with the second-winningest period of Duke football in history.

The Citadel’s athletic director search committee worked with Parker Executive Search, an external search firm, to promote the position and narrow the field to a small number of candidates.

Chase replaces Mike Capaccio, who retired after joining The Citadel in 2012; he was named athletic director in 2018.
