Shooter ‘narrowly misses’ hitting 2 1-year-old kids after firing at car, Knoxville police say

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A man is facing charges after he fired shots at a car in North Knoxville, just missing two one-year-old children who were inside, Knoxville police said Wednesday morning.

It happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday, KPD’s Scott Erland said, when officers responded to the 2200 block of the Lonsdale Pike.

The victims — a man and woman — told officers that they were near Virginia Avenue and McSpadden Street when they saw a man, 29-year-old Wesley Tipton, get out of a silver SUV and fire at the car.

“The victims’ two children, both under the age of two, were inside the car at the time of the shooting,” Erland said. “Nobody was struck or injured by the gunfire, though gunfire narrowly missed one of the children.”

A police report for the shooting said at least one of Tipton’s shots went through the car’s windshield.

After the call, officers responded to the area, Erland said, and took Tipton into custody near Keith Avenue and Mingle Avenue. According to KPD’s report, he had around 90 pills in his car at the time, along with a marijuana pipe.

Tipton was charged with four counts of aggravated assault and being convicted felon in possession of a weapon.
