While many AL.com readers agree with famed food scientist Alton Brown that white sauce is the state’s signature staple, others say Alabama’s reel culinary gem is easy to sea.
In a post to Facebook this week, AL.com asked readers, ‘What food represents Alabama best?’
Nearly 100 commentors responded, and most had a similar answer.
“Catfish and hush puppies,” was the second most popular answer behind commentors who agreed with Brown.
One woman was even specific about where to go for the best plate, commenting “Greenbrier in Huntsville Alabama, the best catfish and hush puppies.”
Other answers went down to the shore for staples like “Shrimp and crab claws fresh off the boats,” or “Bon Secour oysters.”
Another commentor said it’s not just the seafood but the way it’s prepared that makes it unique and suggested a “low country boil” as the state food.
Other answers included cornbread, banana pudding, and the state’s beloved Conecuh sausage.
If you had to pick one food to represent the state, which would you choose?
