DICKINSON, N.D. (KFYR) – It can be difficult to travel when the weather is harsh and road conditions are poor, even if it is just for a quick grocery run. It can be even harder if you’re older and are more prone to serious injuries. Elder Care in Dickinson is making sure days like that are less risky for the elderly.
Andrew Burgos starts each weekday morning the same way; he picks up the day’s supply of meals, loads them up and heads out on his regular route, even if the weather is less than ideal. He said his mother, who worked in health care, made him value work that helps others.
“It’s been part of my life, I think, from an early age, so I just feel that if people need something, you should be there to help them,” Burgos said.
On any given day, he’ll see at least 37 of those people during one of his delivery trips. Aside from needing to drive extra carefully when the streets are frozen over, Burgos said he also makes it a point to check in on each of those 37 people.
John Urban is someone Burgos checks on regularly. He said Burgos’ help has been invaluable.
“The food is good. Actually, for me, it provides me with a nutritious meal,” Urban said.
It’s a meal that he doesn’t have to take unnecessary risks to get.
“This thing eliminates one of those hassles on a day like today. […] This has been a great service to us,” Urban said.
Burgos said it’s fulfilling work, and he values the connections he’s made during his stops.
“They’re just really great people, so I’m just happy to do it for them,” Burgos said.
He said on Fridays, they leave extra frozen meals to help get recipients through the weekend.
