LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A local restaurant owner is making her mark on the Lubbock community with a legacy of 12 years.
What began as a way to provide for Dorothy Lee’s family, has grown into a thriving business that serves much more than just meals. While rising food costs and long hours in the kitchen have been challenges for Lee, she says she’s committed to her community.
During her journey, she once had three restaurants opened at the same time, being the only Black woman in community to do so.
“I’m the only one here in Lubbock, Texas, that has done that at one time. I guess I’m crazy, you know, I’ll try anything,” Lee said.
At Doc’s Cafeteria, diners can enjoy a full soul food plate, complete with one meat, five sides, cornbread, dessert, and a drink, all for just $12.99.
The cafe, focused on home-cooked meals, has earned it’s special place in the hearts of Lubbock residents, many of whom feel like they’re dining at a family member’s table.
“They don’t have a clue what we do in the kitchen, like you said, we spend hours in the kitchen trying to make sure we have good, hot, fresh soul food coming out the kitchen; it takes hours,” Lee said.
She currently has two restaurants opened, Doc’s and A Bucket of Love. You can find Doc’s Cafeteria at 4919 34th St and A Bucket of Love at 6012 82nd St Suite E.
