Tri-State kids learn about livestock judging

BAYLIS, Ill. (WGEM) – On Saturday, 50 Tri-State children participated in an interactive livestock judging clinic.

For the second time in three years, the University of Illinois Extension program worked with the John Wood Community College’s Ag Education Center to teach children about the complexities of livestock judging.

“It was really exciting. I didn’t know what to say. I was just excited to come, meet new people, and learn more about cows and sheep and goats,” said participant Sydnee Kassing.

The clinic first included a lecture in which participants were shown the different characteristics of livestock and how to identify them.

Next was the interactive portion, in which JWCC ag-students tested the participants by showing them real livestock including sheep, cows and goats.

“They’re learning time management skills, they’re learning communication. For example, the kids have to judge the class then turn around and answer questions based on memory,” said clinic organizer Kristin Huls.

The event was last held in 2023 and event organizers hope to continue holding the clinic every other year. They also hope to grow the clinic’s turnout.
