Sackets Harbor, New York (WWNY) – Folks took to the slippery surface of Lake Ontario Saturday morning in search of the perfect catch. Welcome to Sackets Harbor’s first ever Kids Ice Fishing Derby.
“Turned out to be a beautiful day. Couldn’t ask for better weather: Light breeze, nice ice, great turnout with kids,” said Jamison Lloyd, one of the event organizers.
As the name implies, kids were the stars of the show at this event, competing to see who could catch the largest pike and crappy.
“There hasn’t been an ice fishing tournament in Sackets in a while. Figured it’d be a great way to get kids and families out, bring everyone together, have a good time,” said Lloyd.
This particular derby was made possible thanks to a partnership between Outskirts 1812 and Elite Marine Inc. Organizers tell us they wanted to give kids something fun to do during an otherwise quiet season.
“We just love bringing kids together. Taking them outside, and away from video games,” said Nicole Best another event organizer.
This was the first derby of its kind in Sackets Harbor, but given the turnout, we’re told it certainly won’t be the last.
“We want to grow the event every year. This year, donations are going to go to the local fire department. Hoping in future years, we can find more charitable causes to donate to,” said Jamison Lloyd.
