(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — University of Illinois engineering students are bringing a new type of car to the Chicago Auto Show this week.
It’s not a typical week of school for U of I students with Illini Solar Car.
“This is our second time at the Auto Show. We’re super excited to be here and to get to share, you know, our team and what solar power can do,” said senior Brooke Mickey.
She is the President of Illini Solar Car, a team of students that designs, builds, and races solar powered cars.
“The car we brought with us to the auto show is named Calypso, and we’ve driven her in one race so far this summer. We went from Nashville, Tennessee, all the way up to Casper, Wyoming, so over 1500 miles just on solar power.”
Mickey says it’s “unreal” to see a car she helped design next to some of the big name manufacturers.
“It’s really cool that we’re teaching students how to push the limits of engineering, even while they’re still in school, especially when they go out into the workforce, they can just keep that same mindset, keep on pushing the technology further.”
