Need a break but still have the kids in tow? A Suffolk cafe is giving parents the best of both worlds. Marta Berglund takes us inside Jungle Jam’s play cafe.
In an environment that looks and sounds like a playground, it may be hard to imagine relaxing with a fresh cup of coffee or tea. But that’s exactly what parents, grandparents and caretakers get to do at Jungle Jamz Cafe.
Meghan Hopkins started Jungle Jamz with her husband. The Navy veteran saw the need for a space like the play cafe while her husband was deployed, especially when she was at home with a newborn and a 3-year-old.
“There’s no place that I could go where I could meet other moms or other parents, and then also make friends, to have a little activity,” Hopkins said.
Jungle Jamz is split into two sections: a shoe-free play space geared toward kids up to 7 years old and a cafe where adults can keep an eye on their little ones and relax.
“We partner with Tidewater Coffee in Portsmouth. We also have tea or non-caffeinated beverages, but I think the coffee is a fun part of it,” Hopkins said.
Hopkins said some people come in just for the coffee, including some DoorDash users.
Jungle Jamz also hosts stress-free parties.
“You literally can just come in, let your kids play, then you leave and we do all the cleanup,” Hopkins.
Hopkins says she wants Jungle Jamz to be a place where adults and kids alike can have options.
“It’s a place where you can come and meet friends that you can do things with on the outside,” Hopkins “You can make memories with your child, or you might take a minute to relax and recharge.”
