Gospel Mission Food Pantry on the winter season

MARIETTA, OH (WTAP) – Officials at the Gospel Mission Food Pantry have been quite busy during the winter season.

Candy Waite, a co-founder of the Gospel Mission, said the winter time can be a lot for the pantry as they not only just offer food.

“We do see a difference in the winter time with people coming in needing food and needing gloves, hats, and things to keep them warm.” Candy said. “We also provide the hand warmers and the toe warmers for people that are homeless and needing to keep warm.”

Jeff Waite, the other co-founder at the Gospel Mission, said that meat is most demanded item that people want in the pantry.

“Meats one of those things that’s expensive,” Jeff said. “It’s hard for them to come by. We always try to have tuna, spam, or a canned meat item. ”We do have people once in a while that will donate a deer they’ve had process to the facility. We have some people that donate a number packages a hamburger, and those go quickly because people need their meat.”

“If this place didn’t exist, a lot of people would go hungry, and they would be living on the streets,” added Dana Poraun, a person that uses the pantry.

Jeff added that they are both grateful by the support of the community

“We keep the pantry stocked from our extra we have,” Jeff said. “I will say for the community, we owe them a great debt of gratitude. Without them we wouldn’t be open because we don’t take any financial assistance.”
