Hall County couple jailed for child abuse after kids found in dire conditions

Two people facing child abuse charges after police say four kids were rescued from awful conditions have been sentenced.

According to Hall County District Court records, Daniel Fontaine, 35, was sentenced to 300 days in the Hall County Jail on four misdemeanor counts of child abuse. Amanda Wolfe, 32, was sentenced to 270 days on the same charges.

Both previously pleaded no contest to the charges, which were reduced from four felony counts of child abuse.

The Grand Island Police Department said they were called to Lazy V Apartments in October 2023 for a welfare check.

An arrest affidavit says that when officers arrived at the apartment, they observed four children – ages 3, 2, 1 and a newborn – with no clothes on and only diapers or pull-ups, had dirt all over their bodies and had rashes when they were later checked out at a local hospital.

GIPD says the 2-year-old was restrained in a stroller and had matted hair in the back of her head, which was indicative of her being left there for extended periods of time.

The 1-year-old was also reportedly observed in a playpen with old, rotted food and trash, while the newborn was restrained in a car seat with a formula bottle by her side.

The affidavit says the apartment was found to have old food and trash all over the floor and the fridge and freezer had rotten food with bugs crawling inside. GIPD says the bathroom floor was covered in feces and the bathtub was covered in feces and bugs.
