Amarillo’s Kids Cafe launches fundraiser to combat child hunger

Kids Cafe, a year-round program providing after-school meals to over 5,000 children weekly, is launching a fundraising campaign to address child hunger in the community.

Maribel Sotelo, director of Kids Cafe, highlighted the severity of food insecurity faced by many children.

“What if there isn’t something to eat when they get home? That is between 4 p.m. and the next morning at breakfast at school,” Sotelo said. “That’s literally roughly 14 hours of fasting before they can eat something again.”

The Eastridge Mission Center, one of the program’s beneficiaries, has seen a growing demand for food assistance.

Mike Garman, executive director of Eastridge Mission Center, noted the increasing needs within the community.

“Of course, Eastridge is one of the largest refugee communities in the state and through the years that’s increased more and more, and they’ve been a primary target of the ministry we provide and yes it’s grown from I think we started out with like 30 and we’re up to over 80 now,” Garman said.

The Kids Cafe Kickoff is set for February 11.

Sotelo emphasized the importance of donations, stating, “Whatever you’re funding, whatever you’re putting your money into, and donating to, whatever organization you’re doing that for, in particular for us, you’re providing the most basic need. For these kids to grow healthy and to grow a healthy community, and to grow a healthy Amarillo, that’s what you’re doing when you donate.”
