Theo James’ 2 Kids: Everything He’s Said About Fatherhood Since Welcoming His Daughter and Son

Theo James’ priorities changed once he became a father of two kids.

The White Lotus star and his wife, fellow actress Ruth Kearney, married in 2018. A few years later, they started a family with the arrival of their daughter in 2021, followed by a son in 2023.

Although James is private about his family, he’s said that fatherhood has changed him “in an amazing way.”

“It’s discombobulating at first,” he told InStyle in May 2022. “Especially with your first child because your whole life changes, but ultimately it makes you — definitely for me, at least — a much more solid person.”

His first child was born in 2021

James and Kearney became parents with the birth of their daughter in August 2021, about three years after they wed.

The experience gave James a new lease on life, he told InStyle in May 2022.

“You still do all the same s— that you did before,” he said. “But for example, obsessiveness, worrying about X or Y — it does calm that kind of outlook on life because it makes you realize that certain things are a bit more important.”

He shared the first photo of his daughter in 2022

James posted the first public picture of his daughter in 2022. He did so as part of a digital exhibition for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which explored the concept of home.

“Home is a right to safety, an ability to protect your family and the freedom to occasionally squidge those tiny toes,” James wrote alongside a photo of what appears to be his foot next to his daughter’s foot.

His second child, a son, arrived in 2023

While walking the red carpet for the 2024 Emmys, James — who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for The White Lotus — revealed that he and Kearney had welcomed a second child.

“We have a 4-month-old … We’re in the thick of it,” the actor told KTLA in January 2024.

Their son’s birth came roughly two years after they had their daughter.

He became a more relaxed parent after his son’s birth

As the youngest of five children, James was afforded “luxuries” that his other siblings didn’t have, like “less scrutiny,” he told Gentleman’s Journal in February 2024.

That same mentality applies to parenting his own kids: James became far calmer after welcoming his second child, he recalled.

“Just thinking of myself, I have two children, and having the second one, you’re much more relaxed and laconic, existentially, as a parent,” he said.

His priorities changed once he became a dad

While promoting The Gentlemen in 2024 — one of his first projects after welcoming his son — James revealed that because fatherhood was “joyful,” it was hard to be away from his children.

“Sad to be away from the family, you know?” he told Entertainment Tonight in March 2024. “It’s not great being away, but, no, very happy.”

Shortly after, the actor opened up about how his children changed the way he thinks about his job.

“Kids helped that for me,” James told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2024. “You’re selling a product — yourself, in some ways — especially when you’re starting out. But having kids, you realize that some of it doesn’t matter.”

“Because when I was a young actor, I was rather hungry. I’d jump from job to job and f—— all that stuff,” he continued. “But I don’t want to take our kids out of school just because [a job] seems sexy at the time.”
