LONG BEACH, Miss. – Kids walked away with brand new fishing gear at the 4th Annual Kid’s Fishing Project, hosted by the Gulf Coast Secret Fishing Report.
Fishing poles, tackle, sunglasses, and lunch were handed out free of charge at the Long Beach Harbor. The event aims to give kids the chance to learn a new skill and spend quality time with family.
“There’s so much that comes with just fishing. It’s more than just catching a fish. Take a kid fishing,” said Travis Allen, founder of the Kids Fishing Project.
Fishing poles were available in sizes for all age groups.
“Them having big and small poles really worked out because now me and my little cousins can go fish – she has a small pole and I have a big pole,” said Isabella Dixon of Biloxi.
Organizers say fishing teaches kids lessons that last a lifetime.
“It’s a good way for kids to spend time. It’s a way they can feed their families someday. It’s a way they can stay out of trouble,” said Jason Lindholm with the Long Beach Rotary Club.
Many kids were already making plans to cast out their new rods.
“I got a big ole pole I think that I can use later,” said Brody Dixon of Biloxi.
“I want to get a croaker,” said another participant, Solomon.
Founder Travis Allen says the event continues to grow each year and he hopes it helps create lifelong memories.
“The one goal of the day is to get a fishing pole in every kid’s hands and promote family time and creating memories,” Allen said.
Organizers plan to return next year with even more fishing gear to give away. For updates on future events, visit the Gulf Coast Secret Fishing Report Kids Fishing Project Facebook page.
