The Phoenix Fire Department said the group of five adults and six children was a quarter of the way up Holbert Trail, near 7th Street south of Dobbins Road, when the call for help came out.
The group started their hike at around 10 a.m., then at noon the group began to experience heat-related issues and called for help.
“Multiple children within the hiking group started complaining of heat, exhaustion and unable to continue the hike,” the fire department said.
After crews reached the group, they used “rapid cooling” to treat them.
“Members of the technical rescue team put a nine and 11-year-old in the big wheel basket brought them back down to the base of the mountain,” the fire department said. “Rescuers assisted the rest of the group down as well.”
The fire department said the group refused to be taken to the hospital.
Holbert Trail is one of the trails closed on extreme heat days like Sunday, according to the fire department.
“There were numerous signs posted stating that the trail was closed for hiking activity,” the fire department said.
This is a developing story; additional details will be added as they become available.
