Food drive held to benefit Putnam CAP

Senator Peter Harckham and Maria O’Leary were joined by volunteers in sorting the food

CARMEL- State Senator Peter Harckham (D, Mt. Kisco) is sporting a new nickname these days, “King of the Food Drive.”

Thanks to the generosity of scores of his constituents in the Putnam, southern Dutchess and northern Westchester area, the 40th District State representative has collected tens of thousands of pounds of food along with cash and gift cards for organizations feeding the hungry.

The senator’s most recent food drive took place Saturday at Drew United Methodist Church in Carmel—a drive earmarked for the CAP Food Pantry.

Vehicles lined up outside the church and an army of volunteers removed the donations before sorting them and placing the merchandise in a van later delivered to CAP headquarters.

Harckham was appreciative of the community support. “Too many of our friends and neighbors are still troubled by economic uncertainty and food insecurity. We can all agree that no child can ever go to bed hungry while we have a say about it. Every donation has helped to make a difference.”

Marissa O’Leary, director of the Putnam Community Action Partnership, an antipoverty program said, “since the Covid-19 pandemic began, our agency has seen hundreds of new families each week coming in for food assistance. Because there is such a need, we very much appreciate Senator Harckham organizing the drive as well as those for donating.”
