One witness, Richard Tims, says he never expected to see something like this happen in his small town.

“Just a whole surreal moment,” he said.

Richard Tims’ dashcam caught the terrifying moments, but Tims and his teenage son witnessed it with their own eyes. He says they were picking up ingredients to make hamburgers that night.

“Did our shopping, walked out, loaded up the car, and then my son, he took the basket over to the corral,” Tims said. “And by the time — when he got to the corral, that’s when the gunshots rang out.”

Tims said he quickly became concerned.

“I knew exactly what it was,” he said. “And I immediately started thinking for his safety.”

Tims’ son crouched down and, when he deemed it safe, ran back to the car. Soon, they saw a man and a woman limping, having been shot in the foot and leg.

“My mind started going to the victims, how can I help them?” Tims said.

He called 911 and let the operator know he had dashcam video.

Tims says he’s grateful the situation didn’t turn into a larger tragedy and hopes the victims recover smoothly. Now, he’s focused on helping his son process what he saw.

“I can only imagine the fear that he had being raised in an environment where we hear about active shooters in school and stuff like that,” he said.

He’s encouraged his son to have an open dialogue about the incident.

“I told my 17-year-old that, look, it’s okay to feel things, but let me know. Let me know what you’re feeling so that we can address it and not let it go unnoticed,” Tims said.

The Food Lion closed following the shooting, but reopened Saturday morning.

Officials say the two victims were taken to the hospital and are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
