PERRYSBURG – A Perrysburg teen is hosting a food drive Sunday to earn his Eagle Scout.
But it’s not human food – Ben Groman is collecting dog and cat food.
Groman has been a member of Troop 110 in Perrysburg since third grade. He just finished his junior year at Penta Career Center.
He is working with the Wood County Humane Society to gather dog and cat food to donate back to the shelter.
The event will be at Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 E Indiana Ave., from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
He said he currently has two cats at home and “I think possibly they are the best things that came into my life. So, I would like to help out other families who have pets. I don’t want them to have to get rid of their pets just because they can’t afford food.”
He called the humane society and learned they give away nearly 700 pounds of pet food to 45 families in 2024.
Groman hopes to collect “a decent bit of food” and is aiming for 350 pounds.
The wet and dry food Groman collects will be given to families already struggling and won’t be used at the shelter.
The humane society may bring some adoptable pets to the event.
Groman said the past Eagle Scouts in his troop have built stuff including little libraries and benches “and I wanted to change it up a little bit and be different.”
He is currently a Life Scout and must earn his Eagle Scout before he turns 18 in December.
“What Scouts has done for me since all the years I’ve been in it, I feel like I’ve really grown as a person. It’s helped me mature and I’ve learned good skills that are going to be useful later in my life and are useful now,” he said.
He said it’s a huge honor to become an Eagle Scout. It takes a lot of work and dedication.
Groman is in the firefighter program at Penta and said he hopes to work with the Perrysburg Fire Department when he graduates.
He is the son of Cara and Renee Groman.
