SIDNEY – Four girls are sad and angry after their rock snake was taken from Tawawa Park.
Sidney resident Rachelle Breland and her four great-nieces, Brooklyn, Adalyn, Grace and Emma Elliott, created a rock snake and left it at Tawawa Park with permission from Sidney Parks and Recreation Director Duane Gaier.
A rock snake is a trail of hand-painted rocks, with the first rock painted to look like the head of a snake. The snake becomes a community project with any community member adding to the length of the snake with their own painted rocks. The snake, named Hissy Elliott, was meant to become a community project.
Breland and her great-nieces placed the head and first few rocks of the snake on June 16 with a sign that said, “Hello Ssssidney, my name is Hissy Elliott the rock snake. Here to make you smile. Add a painted rock to my body to help me grow a mile. Please do not remove painted rocks.” Breland also set up a Facebook page called “Rock Snakes of Sidney” to document the snake’s growth.
The rocks were placed near the large plaque at the all-inclusive playground. “It is the perfect spot where the community comes together and all kids are included,” Breland said.
The bottom of the snake’s head said, “Please do not take me away. Paint a rock and add it to my body. Let’s see how long I can get.”
Hissy Elliott was dedicated to all the rainbow babies and their families. A rainbow baby is a baby born after a loss. The nine-year-old Elliott triplets — Brooklyn, Adalyn and Emma — are all rainbow babies, with Grace born two years later.
On June 20, Breland discovered the sign was where she left it, but the rocks were all missing.
Breland said the girls are devastated that someone took Hissy Elliott. Brooklyn said, “I am mad and sad but mostly mad that Hissy is gone because we had so much fun doing it.” Emma said, “I am so sad for all our hard work. I can’t believe someone would take it.”
Since it was not returned to Tawawa Park, they are going to try again and place a new Hissy Elliott in the same place. They are hopeful this one will have the opportunity to grow.
