Local health officials remind campers of food safety

QUINCY (WGEM) – With summer heat comes camping trips and picnics in the Tri-State areas. Whether soaking in the sun, health officials want to remind people that food safety is just as important at the campsite as it is in the kitchen.

While people may already have their travel arrangements finalized, the next focus should be how to keep meals safe while out in the great outdoors.

“Make sure you have a plan and with that plan, plan how you’re going to transport the cold foods,” said Tony Dede, environmental health supervisor for Adams County Health Department. “You want to keep cold foods cold, hot foods hot. If your doing a camping trip, it’s not likely that you’re going to take hot food, you’re not going to take a roast beef with you on a camping trip. You might be taking burgers or cold cuts or that sort of thing with you.”

Dede added the first step to taking a trip is planning out your trip and not forgetting the importance of food storage:

  • Consider packing two coolers, one for beverages and the other for raw meats
  • Be sure to fill coolers with ice to ensure no warm or hot air can enter the coolers
  • Pack all raw meats to the bottom of coolers to avoid any spillage and cross contamination
