Aggieland Humane Society supports local furry families with pet pantry food drive

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Aggieland Humane Society hosted its second Community Pet Food Drive on Thursday. Organizers and volunteers’ hard work gathering donations is providing dinner for lots of furry families.

Aggieland Humane Society distributed bags of food to help feed the 4-legged friends of the Brazos Valley after gathering donations since April. On Thursday, the shelter gave those donations to local pet parents working to provide for their furry family members.

Organizers say the Pet Pantry Distribution will be held on the last Thursday of each month.

“We know that the poverty rates here across the Brazos Valley are nearly double the national average, and so pet families are just one crisis away from either not being able to pay their bills or potentially having to give up their pet or feed their pet before they feed themselves,” explained Katrina Ross, Aggieland Humane Society executive director, on why this drive is important.

She continued, “We know that that is a very real reality for a lot of our neighbors, and so if we can provide some comfort in providing free pet food, that’s what we’re here for.”

Families stopping by got more than just bags of food. They also got information about future events, treats, and lots of animal love.

Organizers said the donation drive brings the community together and helps those caring for animals who could end up in an animal shelter otherwise. Ross said events like these keep families with animals intact.

“It is so fulfilling to know that pets in need are going home and they’re going to have a full belly, and that their families have comfort in knowing that their pets are safe and they’re cared for and that they get to stay with them and not have to end up in the shelter because they couldn’t afford to feed them,” Ross detailed.
