MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – One Meal Mobile has been helping families in need for several years. For the last six years, President and CEO Michelle Stewart has organized weekly food distributions at their building in Saraland to give food boxes to people throughout the area. But Stewart says times have been hard over the last couple of years
“The sponsorship we had would pay all our bills and we haven’t had a sponsorship like that in two years, so we’ve been going by the grace of God,” said One Meal Mobile President and CEO Michelle Stewart.
Stewart says since then, they’ve been using money from community donations to pay the bills at their building. Whatever is left gets used to buy food from Feeding the Gulf Coast at a discounted rate. But thanks to rising costs and demands, Stewart says they had to shut down the weekly distributions two months ago which left a hole in the community.
“We were serving 500 people come every Friday so 500 people every Friday for the past two months have not been able to have their full blown hey come get a box. So, it’s hurting a lot of people,” said Stewart.
Since then, they’ve been doing weekly outreaches for the homeless community at Cloverleaf Plaza in Tillman’s Corner where they help between 80-100 people each week with a hot meal, clothes and anything else that gets donated. But even that has become challenging.
“The need is so crucial because these people that are unhoused, they don’t have a house they don’t have a daily meal, so we try to help where God knows the greatest need is at the time,” added Stewart.
Stewart says between the bill for Feeding the Gulf Coast and bills at their building it would take about $2,500 to get things back to normal and restart the weekly distributions so she’s asking for anyone to help in any way they can.
“Out of the 2,000 people that we would serve a month, 900 of them are over the age of 60. This could have been somebody’s mother, their grandmother,” said Stewart. “If I could get the bill part taken care of, we’d be ok, that’s where we got hurt. We just need a little help.”
