BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – As many pet parents struggle to provide for their furry family members, Aggieland Humane Society is hoping its new pet food pantry will help keep the families together.
Higher prices, lingering inflation, and more expensive bills during the summer can put people in difficult positions. Paying bills can become a challenge and paying for pet food can become a burden.
According to Aggieland Humane Society, 97% of pet owners say their pets are part of the family, yet many are just one crisis away from losing them.
That’s why the shelter started a new program to help alleviate the issue.
Aggieland Humane Society launched the first pet food pantry in the Brazos Valley on Thursday.
Thanks to local donors, the shelter can now provide free pet food to the community once a month.

Katrina Ross, executive director at Aggieland Humane Society, told KBTX many families across the Brazos Valley can’t afford to feed their pets.
“No family should be broken up because they can’t afford to feed their pet,” Ross insisted.
Thus, the pet food pantry was born.
She emphasized, “There is nothing like that here in the Brazos Valley. Not just Brazos County. Across our region, it is a desert for pet food.”
Starting June 26, the nonprofit will host a drive-through pet food pantry on the last Thursday of each month.
“You don’t need to tell us why you can’t feed your pet. We’re not here to, like, deep dive into your finances or ask you to show proof of income, all of that. Not what we’re here for,” assured Ross. “We’re just here to give you food and say, ‘how many pets do you have? Do you need help getting them fixed? What can we do to help?’”
To keep up this service, Aggieland Humane encourages donations from those who can give. The nonprofit will happily accept any pet food. Sealed is preferred.
“Say you got food and your pet just doesn’t like it, we can also accept that as well and then we will put it in pre-portioned bags,” she clarified.

Additionally, those looking to get involved can become a monthly donor, shop the shelter’s Amazon wish list or volunteer on site.
Ross said she understands the struggle of juggling bills while caring for several pets.
“As a multi-pet owner. I have to space my pets out with their shots and vaccines and everything because I can’t run the financial burden of taking everyone in all at the same time,” reasoned Ross.
This new program is open to people across the Brazos Valley, and if you don’t have a car, that’s no problem. Volunteers can take the food to you.

“Families can just be one financial crisis away from having to feed themselves or feed their pets. So, if we can bridge that gap and help take one less thing off of their plate in these economic uncertain times, we want to do that,” Ross added.
Aggieland Humane Society’s drive-through pantry will be open on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at its facility in Bryan – located at 5359 Leonard Road in Bryan.
Nearly 100 cats and dogs are available for adoption at Aggieland Humane Society right now.
