Social media platform for kids promises safe summer screen time

As kids kick off their summer break, parents are once again facing the challenge of having to spend more time managing screen time.

One online platform is flipping the script, turning passive scrolling into creative, interactive learning.

School being out means more free time and kids are logging more hours online, but not all screen time is created equal.

Zigazoo is one app trying to make screen time both fun and educational.

The kid-safe social media app encourages users to respond to daily video prompts from science facts to dance or sports challenges, building creativity and confidence while keeping safety front and center.

Designed for ages 4 to 15, Zigazoo is moderated, content is screened, users are verified with age-assurance technology, and it’s ad-free.

One interesting feature: kids can not send or receive direct messages on this platform.

A husband and wife duo, two former school teachers, built Zigazoo with their own kids in mind.

“Kids need that digital literacy. That’s not a bad thing. Kids are going to be online during the summer. However, what we want to do is have an open dialogue with them, we want to keep their screen time to a minimum, and when they are on screen time, let’s try and find ways that it can be productive screen time and educational screen time,” said Zigazoo co-founder and CEO Zak Ringelstein.

The Zigazoo app is free, but there is also a premium plus plan that offers added features.

It has nearly 12 million young users.

Zigazoo’s founders still advocate for setting screen time limits.
