Stockton Emergency Food Bank hit with 3 fires in span of a week

Workers are pushing forward after multiple fires at the Emergency Food Bank in Stockton recently. Two of the fires were on June 18, and another one happened early Wednesday morning. The workers are left cleaning up thousands of dollars worth of damages and debris from the three fires in the past week. “In the Mormon slough behind the food bank we have some unhoused residents who have lived there pretty much for the last five years. caught on fire and it ran up the foliage and into the fence and set a tree on fire,” said Emergency Food Bank Stockton CEO Leonard Hansen. The same scenario happened again later that night. “We’ll have to replace the tree and some of the embers fell on the garden. It has 12 beds in it. One of them was destroyed,” Hansen said. Fast forward to Wednesday morning, when cameras captured a new fire, which staff said seems intentional. “Somebody walked up to the fence and threw an incendiary device into the end of the storage container that’s at the end of the lot,” Hansen said Julie Meeks visits the food bank a few times a week. She was frustrated after hearing what happened. “I’m thinking to myself ‘why would you do something stupid like that? All you’re doing is making it hard for everybody else and when people need these things,’” Meeks said. According to the food bank, the damage is around $18,000 and the amount of food lost in the fire could have fed around a hundred people. Bonnie Duarte also receives food from it a few times a month. ” very sad, because I love this place. I mean, without them, you know, I’d be starving throughout the month,” Duarte said. The food bank staff said they are unsure who’s responsible for starting the fire, but they are still left to clean it up. KCRA reached out to the Stockton Fire Department but is yet to hear back.
