Minot daycare teaching kids were food comes from

MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – Agriculture education goes further than tractors in a field. It can also include gardening.

The Kiddie Korral 2.0 Child Care Center is using gardening to help educate young people on where their food comes from.

While a garden seems like a lot of work, from the shopping to the planting, the fresh produce and learning what it can provide are worth it.

The Kiddie Korral 2.0 Child Care Center is using gardening to teach kids like six-year-old Josh about where his food comes from.

“First, the plant start off as a seed and then a sprout and then the grow to the food and plant,” said Josh.

Myka Day, a care provider and parent, said she’s looking forward to what this will bring to the daycare.

“It’ll be fascinating that they get to learn something that’s so impactful in all of our lives,” said Day.

Daycare founder Amanda McCallum said they currently have two garden beds to plant vegetables in.

“We really want to start to bring this into the program because so many kids now days don’t know how to garden,” said McCallum.

The kids get to see the process from start to end, of planting the seeds, growing the veggies, and harvesting and eating them.

McCallum explained that the goal was able to come to life thanks to a garden grant they received from the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

She added that she reached out for gardening help, and Ellen Jebens stepped in.

“I just saw through the Master Gardening course that Kiddie Korral was looking for gardening, you know, someone to help them to garden,” said Jebens.

Jebens is a Master Gardener intern and said that with her teaching background, she was drawn to the project.

Day said she believes it will also encourage kids to eat healthy.

“I think watching it grow from a seed, into a plant and the flowers, and then watching the flowers grow into vegetables, I think they’ll want to actually eat the vegetables more,” said Day.

McCallum said they are already looking into adding more garden beds, and eventually a hydroponics system and worm farm in the coming year.
