Monday marks the first full week of summer vacation for many students across Maryland. But during this long break, many kids lose access to regular, nutritious meals.That’s where the Summer Food Service Program comes in to help. At Montebello Elementary-Middle School, students spent the morning eating and having fun with friends, and they were able to stay inside during the dangerous heat.”A lot of kids don’t eat food, and a lot of kids stay home by themselves during the summer,” said Anjanette Hall-Pollard, the school’s cafeteria manager. “So I think it’s a good program to come to — where you can learn things, have a fun time, and get a nutritional meal from food service.”The program runs until Aug. 22. Several other districts in Maryland have similar programs, including Baltimore, Howard and Anne Arundel counties.
