AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Wesley Community Center is introducing sports into its summer program for the first time, offering basketball, volleyball, and a dance camp to keep kids active during the break.
America Adame, the Executive Director of the Wesley Community Center, emphasized the importance of providing these opportunities.
“Parents are working from sunup to sundown, and they can’t necessarily take their babies to a basketball practice or to a basketball camp,” Adame said. “I wanted them to have the same physical opportunities that other kids in the neighborhood have.”
Dyonne Luke, a coach at Palo Duro High School, volunteered to coach, inspired by the transformative power of sports.
“Honestly, it changed my life,” Luke said. “I played four years of college basketball, and without basketball, I don’t, I honestly don’t know where I would be in life. It helped me get out of Amarillo, it helped me just see different things.”
Adame hopes to expand the program to include other sports, such as football and soccer, in the future, but noted that more partnerships are needed.
“We always encourage new partnerships and new donors and sponsors to one come in and tour the West Wing and see exactly what we’re doing hands-on and then two to always be willing to give if they’re able to give,” Adame said.
