Overton ISD offers free meals for kids as part of Summer Feeding Program

OVERTON, Texas (KLTV) – Andrew Culver spoke with Michelle Wilson, the child nutrition director for the Overton ISD Summer Feeding Program. Overton ISD participates in the Community Eligibility Provision through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which allows low-income areas to give free meals to any student without needing meal applications.

Overton ISD offers this program for kids up to 18 years old. The program is offered Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and it ends this Thursday.

Wilson said they’ve been running the program for 13 years.

“We average 80 to 90 kids a day, and they come from wherever,” she said. “It doesn’t matter to us. We feed the community kids as long as they show up. Between the ages of zero and 18, we feed them.”

After the ISD program ends, Wilson said people can turn to the local food banks. Until then, she welcomes them to visit the school.

“All kids, come eat,” she said. “It’s here for you. It’s nutritious. It’s free. There are no qualifications other than being a child between the ages of zero and 18, so come get this free, nutritious meal.”

The program takes place at 501 East Henderson Street, in the cafeteria building.
