AKRON, Ala. (WBRC) – A small west Alabama group helping prepare young children for school got a big boost recently.
The E&B Fields Community Service Program readies kids for some of the stumbling blocks that often keep them from succeeding.
A $3,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation helped support a summer program happening in the Akron community, where children are not taking a break from reading this summer.
Reading and math skills are some of the biggest challenges facing kids from Akron, according to Dr. Effie Fields, the Executive Director E & B Fields Community Service Program.
The summer program in Akron works with 35 kids in grades K-9, with the money going towards hands-on material kids are using for summer reading exercises.
“They’re pretty much equivalent to what the students will be using if they were in school. So, the teachers are very well equipped to provide actual instructional studies,” Fields said. I know you came through and saw some of the hands-on tools they were using. The Dollar General Grant really helped with that.”
The summer program ends at the end of June.
Another west Alabama charitable organization toured the E & B Fields Community Service Program while WBRC was there.
We’ll let you know if the organization is awarded another grant to help children.
