As temperatures continue to rise, here’s how to keep your kids safe in the Summer heat

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – With the first full weekend of the 2025 summer season under our belt, there are safety concerns that you need to be aware of when keeping your little ones safe in the summer heat.

Pitt County Safe Kids’ Coordinator, Ellen Walston, says a child’s body heats three times more than an adult’s, and they have a smaller surface area, thus causing challenges in keeping them cool.

As families go throughout their everyday activities, Walston says it’s important to dress your little ones in as light clothing as possible to help cool them off in the car.

While it’s a fun time of year as ENC has many festivals, Walston says it’s also vital to be mindful of proper stroller safety as well.

“Much more lightweight options — something that’s more like a net, instead of the blanket, and again, you just want to make sure that the child has plenty of opportunities to cool themselves. Also, make sure that they’re well-hydrated. We know how important it is to drink water and Gatorade, and yet, we can’t wait until a child is thirsty. We have to make sure that we’re pushing those fluids throughout the day,” she told WITN.

In addition to heat-related health problems, Walston also stresses the importance of keeping an eye out for your children at home.

With families being out of routine during this time of year, it can be easy to forget to look behind your car when pulling out of your driveway for your kids, potentially causing a rear-end accident.

Walston also encourages parents to be mindful in the car, as leaving your child in a hot car when running errands tends to increase in emergencies this time of year as well.

As the Summer season continues, many parents may be wondering just how hot is too hot for their little ones. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that parents should avoid taking their kids outside for long periods in 90-degrees temperatures or higher.
