1) UK Government launches £30 million Games Growth Package
The UK Government has launched a £30 million Games Growth Package with £10m to be provided annually over the next three years.
The funding will support early stage studios and aims to boost the country’s games industry on the global stage. Meanwhile, an industry-led UK Video Games Council will be formed to establish a closer link to decision makers, comprised of representatives from across the sector.
2) Moshi Monsters’ comeback Kickstarter sabotaged by “malicious actor” who made multiple fake pledges
Mind Candy launched a Kickstarter campaign to revive Moshi Monsters as a mobile game, aiming to raise £250,000 through fan support.
At first, the company celebrated reaching the milestone in under 24 hours, but quickly discovered a “malicious actor” had targeted the campaign and submitted multiple fake pledges. This means that in actuality, the campaign goal hasn’t yet been reached, but Mind Candy will persevere despite damage to momentum and morale.
3) Social platform Root raises $9m in seed funding ahead of closed beta
Social platform Root has raised $9m in seed funding as it approaches closed beta. The round was led by Headline Ventures and Konvoy Ventures, with further participation from Day One Ventures and Untamed Ventures.
Root has ambitions to become a “next-gen Discord” and is differentiating from the platform through its design as a tool for communities and developers to organise and coordinate, rather than chat casually.
4) Candy Crush veterans secure $4.6m for Studio555’s interior design game app
Studio555 has raised €4m ($4.6m) in a seed funding round to develop a game-like interior design app, expected to launch next year.
The startup said that the app blends interior design with game and social app elements, allowing users to create and design personal spaces without technical skills.
5) Mobile-first Fortnite Blitz Royale mode launches on June 18th
Shortly after Fortnite’s return to the US App Store, Epic Games has launched a new mobile-first game mode called Blitz Royale.
The temporary mode was designed for mobile but is available on all platforms, with a rogue-like design and an emphasis on five-minute gameplay sessions.
